1. Mandatory Health Insurance

Under Swiss law, anyone residing in Switzerland for more than three months must obtain health insurance within three months of arrival. This insurance must cover illness, accidents, and maternity.

2. Exemptions for EU/EFTA/UK Students

Students from EU/EFTA countries or the UK may be exempt from Swiss health insurance if they:bag.admin.ch
• Are not employed in Switzerland.
• Hold a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

This exemption allows them to receive medical treatment in Switzerland under their home country's insurance system.

3. Exemptions for Non-EU/EFTA Students

Students from non-EU/EFTA countries can apply for an exemption if they have private insurance that offers equivalent coverage to Swiss standards. This exemption is typically granted for up to three years and can be extended once for another three years. After this period, students are required to obtain Swiss health insurance.
